Major Thomas H. Hays bought the land now called ‘Waverly Hill’ in 1883 to become the Hays family’s home. Hays built a one-room schoolhouse to house his children. Ms. Lizzie Lee Harris was hired as the teacher.

Ms Harris loved Walter Scott’s Waverley novels and obtained Hays’ permission to rename the schoolhouse Waverley School. He renamed Waverley Hill his home.

Waverley School was named after Harris’ love for Walter Scott’s Waverley books. The TB bacteria was bred in the wetlands along the Ohio River that caused the tuberculosis epidemic. To stop the spread of the disease, a wooden two-story sanatorium was constructed.

It consisted of an administrative building as well as two open-air pavilions which could accommodate up to 20 patients.

In 1912, the hospital opened for advanced cases. This allowed for 40 additional patients to be treated. Two years later, the children’s pavilion was extended by 50 beds. This brought the total number of patients up to 130.

It was a fact that the main hospital structure was wood-framed and was in constant need for repair.

This problem was solved by building a five-story new building that could accommodate more than 400 patients. Construction began in March 1924.

The new structure was inaugurated on October 17, 1926. It was operational until streptomycin, an antibiotic that is strong enough to combat many bacterial infections including tuberculosis, was introduced.

This was discovered in 1943. It led to a decrease in tuberculosis incidences, which in turn meant that there was less need for hospitals like this one.

Waverly Hills Sanatorium was closed in 1961 due to this scientific breakthrough. One year later, the Woodhaven Geriatric Center opened in the same building.

It was used primarily as a nursing home for elderly people with mobility impairments and dementia.

After 20 years of service, the Woodhaven Geriatric Centre was shut down in 1982. This was due to neglect by patients. One year later, J. Clifford Todd bought the hospital.

He hired Milton Thompson, an architect, and gave him the task of converting the hospital to a low-security prison.

Tina and Charlie Mattingly bought the property in 2001. It has since changed hands again.

The Mattinglys offer tours of Waverly Hills, and they also host a haunted house attraction each Halloween. The property will be completely restored with the money raised.

The hospital has been featured on several TV shows including Ghost Hunters and VH1’s Celebrity Paranormal Project.

The hospital closed in 1961 after the discovery of Streptomycin, an antibiotic that cures tuberculosis. The hospital slowly declined after the treatment was completed.

The Sanatorium was shut down and the facility was quarantined. It was then reopened as Woodhaven Geriatric Center. This is a facility that treats patients with mobility and dementia. It was closed in 1981.

Waverly Hills will experience greater adversity over the next few decades. Vandalism, property loss, and near-condemnation are just a few of the many problems Waverly Hills will face in the future.

The building was destroyed gradually by its previous owners, who had no desire to keep it looking good.

It is sad that this place, which played an important role in medical discovery and history, is being neglected.
